A penny for your thoughts…

I stopped to buy petrol the other day and as I made my way into the kiosk I scanned the headlines of the newspapers. The contrast between the two front page articles was stunning.

One paper had chosen to focus on Robin William’s death. Now, I am part of the generation that watched him in Mork and Mindy and so I was saddened to hear of his death and the circumstances surrounding it. The newspaper was beginning to reveal details of his apparent financial situation, divorce settlements, having to take acting jobs he didn’t want,  how this affected his mental health and how this may have contributed to him taking his own life. It is a sad and tragic loss to his family and to the world But the same issues that affected Robin Williams may be affecting someone on your street…

The other headline was of two friends who had won millions on the National Lottery. They were popping Champagne corks, smiling and telling of the positive change that this money was going to make to the rest of their lives…

The stories throw up so many issues for us as Christians. Our ability to support, pray for and minister those living through mental health issues. Where, who and in what will be put our trust? How do we cope with being dissatisfied with our life or circumstances at any given time?

Where, who and in what will be put our trust?

The Bible encourages us to;  “Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you” (1Peter 5:7).

The Lord Jesus said “Come to me all you who are burdened and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble of heart and you will find rest for your souls” (Matthew 11:28-29).

He also challenged his followers saying “Do not store up for yourselves treasure on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasure in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”  (Matthew 6:19-21). These are wise words for us to ponder and practice.

Father God, help us to place our trust in you, your will and your ways. Give us eyes to see others who might be struggling to cope and give us Your strength to reach out and support them. Amen.
